Grandma's Final Goodbye
Sorry I haven't been on much the last few days, since my grandmother's death Thursday, my dad and I have been handling my mom's part of the household chores so she can handle the funeral plans for my grandmother.
Grandma's funeral was today and it was bright and sunny which is good because funerals are depressing enough without adding rain. It was windy as hell but other than that, it was a beautiful day. My mom and two of her brothers sang but my mom's voice was going and so it didn't sound as good as it sometimes does but given the circumstances no one was saying much. An old friend of the family spoke and so did my uncle Jimmy. I heard a lot of stories about my grandmother that I'd never heard before, some of them were sweet and funny, like how my grandparents met to sad ones about my grandmother having nothing to feed her children except for two kinds of potatoes. The family friend recounted how my grandmother was the best pecan salesperson when the church was raising money for a local Christian school and was very proud of that. My uncle talked about how my grandmother encourage all her kids to do well in school and how proud she was that all five of her children graduated high school. We laughed and cried, all in all, a celebration of a woman who was a cherished wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
Goodbye Grandma, I'm sorry you're not with us anymore but I know where you are is much better and you're not suffering anymore. I'll miss you, especially with Christmas coming up but I have a lot of good memories of you and the fun we had together. I love you.
