She got a sitter and she got a job 'cause she had a promise to keep
For the rest of his life, Jared would always say that God had had an angel looking out for him and Sophie in the days after Brad’s departure. Their landlady, Mrs. James, whom Brad had always described as a douche bag and bitch, had been extremely understanding when Jared had explained to her what had happened and had assured him that he and Sophie were in no danger of being evicted and had even offered to watch Sophie while Jared went job hunting.
He’d managed to find a job the first day he looked working in a bookstore. The pay wasn’t fantastic but it was enough to pay the bills and keep food on the table. Plus, Mrs. James had graciously offered to keep watching Sophie while Jared worked. It was more than he could’ve ever hoped for.
Her day was a factory and evening survival and night was exhaustion and sleep
The job at the bookstore was tough though. Jared was painfully shy and dealing with people everyday was hard on him, but he loved books and helping people find books that they’d never thought they’d be interested in was something he took special pleasure in.
After work, he’d pick Sophie up from Mrs. James and go home, cook dinner and spend a little time playing with her before putting her to bed and watch a little tv before collapsing into bed himself. Then at 6am it was time to start all over again.
Sometimes she felt life was passing her by and watching was all she could do
Before he knew it, Sophie was five years old and he was twenty-five. Jared would sometimes find himself staring longingly at customers in the store when they’d come in with their SOs or spouses. He sometimes wished that he could find someone but whenever he thought about it, memories of Brad would rear up and he’d put it off.
Her friends said "You gotta get outta the house and maybe you'll meet someone new"
Jared’s co-workers and Mrs. James all encouraged him to go out. They were all convinced that Jared could find the perfect guy if he’d give himself the chance. They all told him the same thing: he was handsome, sweet, intelligent and the fact that he was a single unwed father didn’t carry the stigma it had ten years before and that there were plenty of wonderful men out there who would love him and Sophie.
[Chorus:]
She could've tried but she didn't have time
She had a five years old to feed, she had ballet class, piano lessons and t-ball little league
The trouble was that he didn’t have time to date. Sophie was a very active child and she was involved in a lot of activities. Between her ballet classes, piano lessons and little league games, not to mention work, Jared had absolutely no time to even consider trying to going out. Not that he hadn’t been approached by other single parents, it was just that Brad had left such a scar on his heart that he was afraid of going through all that again.
Plus, he had to think about Sophie; she’d been a baby when Brad had abandoned them and for the most part she had never really asked why she didn’t have a mommy or another daddy like the other kids did. But Jared was afraid of what would happen if he let himself get involved with someone, particularly one of those parents he met at Sophie’s activities, and things didn’t work out. He wasn’t sure he could deal with that.
She could've laid awake for hours giving lonely nights the power
But she didn't have time
But he had to admit, he did miss being with someone. He was still a young, healthy man and he had needs and urges just like everyone else. But he forced himself to just stick to quiet hand jobs when he was sure that Sophie was sound asleep or was over at a friend’s house.
Jared sighed, sometimes he wished that he could get over his fear of being abandoned again and find someone. He was hopeful that he would one day but for now, he had to be satisfied with what he had for now.
